Large Special Price Rises 70 Cents Over Three Years; Economists Baffled

Term 2, Week 8 · The Bulletin Desk

An analysis of canteen pricing conducted by the Year 11 Economics Society has revealed that the price of the Large Special has increased by 70 cents over the past three years, a rise that the Society describes as "statistically significant" and "personally offensive."

The Large Special, which consists of a chicken schnitzel roll, a packet of chips, and a drink, cost $8.50 in Term 1, 2023. It now costs $9.20. The 8.2% increase over three years outpaces both inflation and the school's fee increases, which the Economics Society notes is "saying something."

The Canteen Manager, asked to explain the increase, cited "supply chain pressures," "ingredient costs," and "the general state of things." When pressed for specifics, the Manager offered to show the Economics Society the freezer, which they declined.

The Year 9 cohort, which accounts for approximately 40% of Large Special sales, has expressed concern. A petition circulating on the Avenue calls for the price to be frozen at $8.50, or alternatively for the schnitzel to be "actually large."

The school reminds students that the canteen operates on a cost-recovery basis and that any profits are reinvested in the canteen. The Economics Society, in its report, notes that this explanation "does not actually explain anything."
